And in the process itself, first comes the bass. It is the bass that lays the foundation, creates the structure, charges the atmosphere, decides. This occurs in these four compositions by Andrzej Święs.

ENTRE PALABRAS, speaks of what remains between us, what we transmit intuitively, between the lines – with just our eyes.

MAE, is a dark Kraków story about how pain and fear lurk in objects and works of art, which scream and protest.

OPIOIDES explains why music affects us like the most powerful drug. And if the effects of that ‘opium’ coincide with the first phase of falling in love, it is hardly surprising that the brain flies into a different orbit.

CANCION TUSAN is about how, regardless of race or continent, people still have to flee with their children in search of a land where they can be free. It is inspired by migration to Peru decades, even hundreds of years ago, and alas it remains current today.

DINIAN is my lullaby ( composed by Marita Alban Juarez) born of the dreams and joys, and also the fears, that arise when a child enters the world. We dedicate this song to our children. This theme also features a few original harmonies by Dominik Wania.

LOS MISTERIOS DEL BUEY, (composed by Jose Manuel Alban Juarez), a guide to the phenomenon of Latin life. Magical realism for beginners, ending with a bitter, universal punchline.

VIENE EL DIABLO BLANCO is like the last shot in a film that tells us of what is to come.

JAZMINES, from a wonderful place for music, Jassmine; from jasmine flowers too, of course. ‘Jazmines’ is also the most beautiful name, used in Peru, for those first grey hairs, and finally the famous phrase ‘La revolución viene oliendo a jazmín’.

about

The quartet comprises Polish-Peruvian siblings Marita and her brother José Manuel, Dominik Wania and Andrzej Święs. They explore themes ranging from tropicalismo and Afro-Peruvian music to free improvised forms that extend beyond Latin jazz. Their first album, Aguas Calientes (Youkali Music, 2015), was dominated by an intense groove section, a dazzling piano sound with sweeping harmonies and a sensitive interpretation of consciously chosen lyrics accentuating the issues of equality and feminism.
The quartet’s music has been broadcast by stations in Poland, Spain and the UK. The musicians regularly perform in the most interest clubs (possessing a piano) and music festivals.
Their second disc, Jazmines (premiered in December 2022), was recorded live at the Jassmine club in Warsaw. The seven works on Jazmines are original compositions immersed in Afro-Peruvian and Latin American sources and in all those which the quartet’s musicians hear in their musical imagination and in reality. As usual, the themes revolve around what is most important in life – love, freedom – although seen from a broader perspective than in previous works.
As Marita says: ‘The lyrics were written quite recently, following my sisterly conversations with women from Peru, Chile, the UK, the Czech Republic, Germany, Russia, Ukraine, Brazil, Zimbabwe and Poland. All these women speak with one voice’.
